Process

How it works, from the first report to the approval letter

No step here depends on a trick. It depends on reading the report properly, documenting and respecting deadlines.

Short answer

The process has four phases: pull all three reports from the official site, classify every item as error or real debt, formally dispute what is inaccurate (the bureau generally has 30 days to investigate) and rebuild the profile with new history and income documentation ready for the lender.

Stage 1

Pull all three reports — not just the app score

A report and a score are different things. Your card app shows one score; the lender financing your home uses a different model, pulled from all three bureaus. We always start with the full reports, free at AnnualCreditReport.com, the only site authorized by federal law.

Stage 2

Account-by-account inventory

We log creditor, partial account number, bureau, balance, limit, status, late payments and dates. The same debt often appears in three places, sometimes with different numbers — and that difference is where many errors hide.

Stage 3

Classify the real problem

Someone else's account, incorrect balance, unrecognized payment, wrong delinquency date, improper duplicate and inquiry without permissible purpose are different situations with different legal grounds. True, current debt is not a dispute: it is a negotiation or a matter of time.

Stage 4

Build the dispute with evidence

Each dispute identifies the item, describes the specific error, requests the exact correction and attaches a copy of the proof. Never originals. We send to the bureau and to the furnisher, because both have a duty to investigate.

Stage 5

Track deadlines and responses

Investigations normally take 30 days, up to 45 when you send additional information mid-process. We log sending, receipt and response. A response can be: received, investigated, updated, deleted or verified — and each calls for different handling.

Stage 6

Confirm on the new report

A result only counts when it shows on the updated report. We pull it again and compare to the original inventory. If an error remains unresolved, we decide the next step based on the response received — never repeating the same letter without new information.

Stage 7

Rebuild and prepare for financing

Cleanup alone approves nobody. We adjust utilization, average account age and credit mix, and organize income paperwork the way lenders ask for it. When the profile is ready, you enter underwriting with the right data.

How long it really takes

It depends on what is on the report. This table separates legal deadlines (guaranteed by law) from observed ones (which vary case by case).

Investigation deadline is not a score-increase deadline

The bureau has 30 days to investigate. That does not mean your score rises in 30 days. If the item is corrected, the effect depends on its weight within your whole history.

What we ask from you

No bank passwords, no credit card numbers. What counts in a dispute is documentation.

  • Photo ID and proof of address (bureaus require this to open an investigation)
  • All three reports, or authorization to pull them together with you
  • Proof of what you claim: statement, receipt, payoff letter, police report in fraud cases
  • Income history, if the goal is a mortgage
How your data is handled

Access limited to whoever is working your case, controlled storage, and no sharing with third parties without your authorization. We never ask for bank passwords at any stage.

Questions about the process

Can I do this myself, for free?

You can, and the FTC explains how. The CFPB even publishes sample letters. What we add is case organization, disputes written on the correct grounds, deadline control and reading the bureau response — which is where most people get lost.

Does disputing many accounts at once work better?

No. Mass disputes without grounds are usually classified as "frivolous" and returned without investigation. Worse, they burn your credibility with the bureau. We prefer fewer, well-founded disputes.

How many times can I dispute the same item?

As many times as there is new information. Repeating the same letter without new evidence produces nothing and can end the review.

Do you mail letters or file online?

It depends on the case. Mail with delivery confirmation creates a better paper trail when a matter may become a formal dispute. In other cases the electronic channel is faster. That choice is part of the service.
